From Zero to Sideman in 5 Steps

Master the Art of Supporting Greatness

Master the Art of Supporting Greatness

There’s no single path into a music career. Some musicians come through school, others through experience—but ultimately, this industry only cares about whether you can deliver. From Zero to Sideman in 5 Steps (02S) helps freelance musicians translate their skills into real-world work by clarifying what gets you hired and keeps you working.

Tested and Proven in the Real World

02S is Mel Brown’s ground-breaking guide to starting and building a music career. Originally self-published in paperback in 2007, his ideas have been rigorously tested, refined, proven, and lived. Today, 02S is an online masterclass that translates his framework into clear, repeatable actions – and it’s built for how musicians actually work now. Grounded in real results, 02S has been brought fully into the present through 50 videos – with many more planned and on the way. There’s also an optional private community offering direct access to the author.

Great little book with solid advice

I’m not looking to be a sideman at all but I’m looking to be a better hobby musician. So based on other people saying it was good I thought I’d give it a try. This book is full of great common sense advice. Some I was already taught and others I learned the hard way but he still saved me on the rest. I liked the idea of checking out local bands that are playing and writing down their set lists. They’re playing what people want to hear. Never thought of that. I started to do that not to play with them but as songs to learn and have fun with friends or open mics. A useful little book on a topic where there is none.

Good guide

I ordered this book as a working sideman and I have to say that much of the information Mr Brown gives in this book is good stuff. I ran into some marketing ideas I have never heard before and learned a thing or two.

My experience as a bassist who doubles on upright and electric is a little different from Mr Browns. I think that doubling can increase a bassists income and opens up more opportunities in classical ensembles, string sections for large acts, and more traditional groups such as bebop, bluegrass, folk, and dixieland bands. I also realize that not all young electric players want to take the time to learn upright bass. Mr Brown covers his topic well, he just doesn’t cover the possibilities available if one doubles. Just my slant on this I suppose. No fault of Mr Browns for not including it.

Overall an excellent book. I learned a few things and I have been in the business a while. Mr Brown has some very useful ideas in this book that any musician could use.

Everything you need to know

How often do you find someone who is the absolute top in their field, telling you exactly how to do it? Mr. Brown has won TWO Emmy awards, a phenomenal pro bass player who has shared the stage and CD’s with the who’s who in the music industry. He always has a few records in the Top Ten on major jazz stations. In this book he describes, step by step, exactly how to prepare and build a career in the music industry. It is a fun and entertaining read, but don’t let that fool you – everything you need to know to prepare, practice, promote, network, and build a career is laid out clearly. He even describes the type of gear to use – nothing is missing. Though it is written from a bass player’s perspective, I think any aspiring sideman (musician on the stage or recording who is not the main artist) playing any instrument or even as a vocalist, can use this book as a reference tool for advancing confidently in the direction of their dream. Thank you, Mel, for sharing this wealth of information with the rest of us.

It Goes Right to the Point and is Real!

I wanna Thank You So Much for your wonderful book!
I love every part about it. Your critically vast information and the way you present it is just Amazing!
It goes right to the point and is Real! I’m a professional musician for 23 years now, but coming from a different country and trying to get the straight ins & outs of the music business in the US is a different thing. Your book covered a lot of gaps that I had and provided me with an enormous amount of information valid to this day.

Awesome Book

Awesome Book by Mr. Brown. Concise, informative, and his real world experience shines through. If you are even toying with the idea of starting to work as a player (sideman) I would recommend this book as it gives you all the facts without the filler.

Great Advice!

This is not so much a book on how to play bass as it is a book on how to launch a career as a bass player. Mel Brown is one of the best bassists you’ve never heard of and his career advice is spot on.

This book lays out an exact road map of what you need to do to get a gig as a pro bass player. Mel explains what to do an why. He also provides an accurate look at the life of a professional musician – both the good and the bad so a reader can make an informed career decision.

Mel’s writing is first rate and I look forward to his next book as well.

02S is for musicians of all levels

Start From Wherever You Are

02S meets you wherever you are in your journey, regardless of your instrument. For beginners, it provides clarity—defining a realistic path forward, establishing professional habits early, and replacing confusion with direction. For experienced musicians, it offers recalibration—helping refine your professional presence, sharpen your value in the marketplace, and reconnect your skills with consistent, meaningful work. Whether starting from zero or redefining what’s next, the focus is the same: readiness, relevance, and longevity in today’s music industry.

Beginners: Find the Path

Clarity replaces confusion. Beginners learn what matters first, how to prepare professionally, and how to start building habits that lead somewhere—before bad assumptions take root.

All: Build Momentum

Direction replaces frustration. Intermediate players learn how to turn growing skill into trust, consistency, and real opportunities—bridging the gap between “almost ready” and “in demand.”

Veterans: Stay Relevant

Relevance replaces stagnation. Experienced musicians recalibrate their professional identity, sharpen real-world value, and reconnect their skills to consistent, meaningful work.

02S is for Educators & Employers

The Industry Is the Curriculum.

From Lessons to Livelyhoods

Most musicians learn how to play—but not how to get a gig. 02S translates what employers actually look for into clear, teachable actions educators can use and musicians can apply. The result is a practical path from skill to consistent freelance work.

Hired on Skill, Fired on Fit.

Anyone can be a world-class player and still lose their gig. Why? Because a lot of musicians think they’re accepting a gig and it’s about playing. But employers think they’re solving a business problem and it’s about outcomes. This misunderstanding usually ends up as a firing. When expectations aren’t aligned, music, musicianship, and talent aren’t the problem. The real issue is that no one clarified what success actually looked like. 02S exists to teach musicians how to understand the real job before the job costs them.

Getting Hired Is a Business Agreement.

A brilliant bebop drummer gets hired for a cruise ship gig—then gets fired for not wanting (or not knowing how) to play simple, danceable pop music. Not because they lacked skill—but because they misunderstood the assignment. The gig wasn’t about artistic expression. It was about serving the cruise line’s clientele. 02S bridges that gap, and illustrates how to match your skills to the real-world purpose of the music.

10 out of 10

It was insightful not just for students but also for myself… 10 out of 10! I would recommend Mel Brown for any kind of guest lecturing, especially when it comes to being a side man making a living in a really cutthroat industry, but also making a living in a way that fosters professional relationships and keeps the income coming!

I cannot recommend it enough

I had the pleasure of participating in a terrific workshop by Mel Brown titled "From Zero to Sideman," and I cannot recommend it enough. This is exactly what musicians in the 21st century need to be learning because it’s really a new paradigm, and Mel is all over it. Everything from how to actually deal with the music, deal with musicians. They asked many aspects of the music business to self promotion and understanding how to use the latest in terms of technology in terms of promoting yourself as a musician Mel has all of that covered in a very cohesive way that’s well organized and easy to follow so make sure you don’t squander this opportunity and get on with it and have Mel come and do a presentation for you you will not regret it for a moment.

Very Informative

Mel,

I received your book today, and read through it this morning. I found it to be very informative, and to line up with my own professional experiences. I will be using some of the tips myself, and recommending it to my students.

02S is for parents and people who care

Support Them with Wisdom, Not Worry.

When your child, family member, or a friend says “I want to be a musician,” it can feel exciting and terrifying at the same time. 02S helps everyone involved replace fear with understanding. It illustrates how the music industry actually works today, what separates hobbyists from working professionals, and how real musicians build stable, freelance careers over time. When the path is understood by loved ones, their belief, confidence, and resolve replace fear—and their support becomes a powerful advantage instead of a silent worry.

For Parents

When the music industry feels mysterious, fear fills the gaps. 02S helps parents understand how musicians actually build careers today—what matters, what doesn’t, and what success really looks like beyond stereotypes.

For Family

It takes a village. When musicians feel understood at home, everything changes. With 02S, informed support builds trust, confidence, and resilience—giving aspiring musicians the emotional foundation they need to grow, adapt, and stay the course.

For Supporters

Well-meaning support can turn into pressure when the path is unclear. With the real-world context of 02S, supporters can ask better questions, offer healthier encouragement, and become steady allies instead of anxious skeptics.

The book Zero to Sideman in 5 Steps is a clear and practical guide that proves there’s a prepared place for a prepared person. The book was gifted to us by Mel Brown when my son, Brandon Rose, was just 11 years old. At the time, Brandon—already a child prodigy on the bass—had no idea how his skills could translate into a career as a professional sideman. This book clearly illustrates that attitude and professionalism matter just as much as talent. As the father of a young musician, I often referred to its contents while guiding him through his formative years. The steps are straightforward, insightful, and should be in every musician’s toolbox. Ultimately, the lessons from this book helped guide Brandon through his education, culminating in a Master’s degree in music from Michigan State University and a thriving career as a successful sideman in the music industry.

02S helps you plan your work and work your plan

Intention Changes Everything.

“The numbers are easy to point to now— decades of work, consistent demand. But none of that was possible without the first step: getting the call. Before the streams, before the credits, before the longevity, there had to be trust, preparation, and someone willing to say yes. Every career starts exactly the same way—with a single opportunity earned.”

The Work Before the Work.

“Long before the streams, charts, and awards, I needed opportunities. My first major break came when I deliberately tested my 5-step process for getting hired—on a late-night show back in the day called The Arsenio Hall Show. I prepared for the gig, got ready for them to say “Yes”, and then I asked him to let me sit in with his band. It worked. Mr. Hall introduced me to 20 million of his friends that night. 02S is the exact plan I followed then and now.

Hired Before the Handshake.

“Most freelance work doesn’t come from close relationships—it comes from professional trust. 02S breaks down how to become the person others feel confident recommending, even when they don’t know you well. I’m not standing next to Eddie Murphy in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps because of flashy chops or being well-connected. I’m there because someone put my name forward—and trusted exactly how I would show up.”

The Long Game of Being Essential

“Not all preparation is public or visible on stage or on set. The most important work happens quietly, long before anyone’s watching. Being part of projects like The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas wasn’t about being in the room at the right time—it was about being prepared long before the room existed. Before anyone needed to know me personally, I had already done the work of clarifying how I thought, how I prepared, and how I would contribute. I focused on removing uncertainty, making decisions easy, and letting my work speak clearly—especially when I wasn’t there to explain it. That kind of clarity travels easily, and it often speaks louder than introductions ever could. 02S shows you how to build this foundation for yourself.”

What's Inside 02S

Not a Leap of Faith Just 5 Simple Steps.

Step 1: Choose the Life

Choose the Life means deciding to be a Sideman with your eyes open. This segment defines what a Sideman is, what a Sideman does, and, more importantly, what a Sideman isn’t. You’ll also learn where Sidemen fit into the music industry as a whole.

Step 2: Equip Yourself

Here you’ll find suggestions on selecting and buying the digital and musical gear necessary to chase success as a Sideman. Mel shares some experiences here to give you an idea of whether you should continue building on what you’ve got — or if you’ll need to rethink your choices.

Step 3: Educate Yourself

This segment specifically addresses Mel’s approach to learning and playing music, preparing for gigs, communication, and some other important industry topics outside of playing your instrument. Metadata, credits, and royalties for non-featured session musicians are covered.

Step 4: Make a Demo

There are no basic standards or guidelines for making demos, for their content, or even a universally accepted format in which to present them. Mel demonstrates that a demo is actually a system that supports your networking.

Step 5: Self Promote

Here Mel shares proven methods on “getting your name out there”, and why the music industry is 5% of what you know and 80% of who you don’t know. If you’re looking for the secret to mind-blowing networking, Steps 4 and 5 are for you!

Time to go to work.

Step into your musical life with confidence.

From Zero to Sideman is an inspiring piece of work, and I think if nothing else, even if you don’t end up pursuing music as a full-time thing, it’ll give you the satisfaction of understanding it from the eyes and experiences of a guy who’s really done it all. This is a guy who’s got it together. This is a guy who understands marketing, marketing of music, marketing of music products, and marketing of musicians.

The day he came to me with a CD Rom that encompassed his career, his goals, his achievements was an amazing day. I’ll never forget, and I think he paved the way for how all bass players and musicians should present themselves. Check out a Mel Brown music seminar and you will not be disappointed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions, clear answers.

01 Will this actually help me get hired, or is it just career theory?

02S is the EXACT blueprint that Mel Brown created to launch his career and it’s all about creating the strongest foundation for being hireable. 02S is built on real hiring standards and professional expectations. Every concept is tied to practical behaviors that help musicians earn trust, get called, and stay hired in real-world freelance environments.

02 What if I’m already working but feel stuck or inconsistent?

That’s one of the most common reasons musicians enroll. The framework helps identify what’s breaking consistency and replaces guesswork with clear, repeatable professional habits.

03 Do I need to be pursuing full-time music for this to be useful?

No. Many musicians apply these principles while balancing other work or transitioning between phases of their career. The focus is on readiness, not labels. Mel Brown used this exact blueprint to transition from working at a bank to a full-time music career.

04Is this only for beginners, or will it help experienced musicians too?

02S is designed to meet musicians wherever they are. Beginners gain clarity and direction early, while experienced musicians use the framework to recalibrate, refine or even redefine their professional presence, and stay relevant in a changing industry.

05 What if I’m self-taught or didn’t go to music school—will this still apply to me?

Yes. 02S is built for musicians from all backgrounds. The industry doesn’t hire based on where you learned—it hires based on how you show up and deliver. This program focuses on professional readiness, not credentials.

06 I already play well. How is this different from technique or practice courses?

This masterclass focuses on everything that happens when you’re not actually playing music—preparation, communication, reliability, and trust—because those are the factors that determine who gets called back.

07 Can my child really make a living as a musician?

Yes—but not by accident, and not by talent alone.

Today’s successful musicians are independent professionals who understand how to prepare, communicate, adapt, and deliver in real-world situations. This masterclass explains what working musicians actually do to get hired and stay hired—skills rarely taught in traditional music education. When parents understand this process, they can help their child make informed decisions, develop professional habits early, and pursue music with both passion and practicality.

08 What if they don’t become famous?

Most working musicians aren’t famous—and they don’t need to be.
The music industry is built on freelance professionals who tour, record, teach, perform, and collaborate across many income streams. This masterclass focuses on sustainable, realistic careers—not overnight success stories.

09How can I support my child without pushing or controlling them?

Support doesn’t mean pressure—it means clarity.
By understanding how the industry works, parents can ask better questions, encourage healthier choices, and become trusted allies instead of worried bystanders.

10 Can a freelance musician really make a living today?

Yes—but not by accident. Sustainable careers are built on reliability, relevance, and professional trust. This masterclass focuses on those foundations rather than hype or unrealistic promises.

11 Does this prepare students for life beyond music if plans change?

Yes. The skills taught—communication, preparation, self-assessment, and professional storytelling—transfer directly to other fields and support confident pivots when needed.

12 How does this complement existing music education programs?

02S focuses on professional practice—an area often underserved in traditional curricula. It complements technical and academic training rather than replacing it.

13 Is this realistic, or does it promote false expectations about the industry?

This program is grounded in how work actually happens. It replaces myths with clarity and focuses on preparation rather than promises.

14 What if I need to take a day job while pursuing music—will this still help me?

Absolutely. That’s precisely how Mel Brown started out. That’s how he learned that the same skills that help folks in traditional work environments get hired—clear communication, structured thinking, and professionalism—are equally valuable in the music industry.

15 Can this be used as a remote alternative to Artist-in-Residence or adjunct roles?

Yes. Institutions use 02S as a scalable mentorship resource that delivers real-world perspective without the complexity of additional staffing.

16 How is this different from guest lectures or career panels?

This is a structured, repeatable framework—not a one-time talk. Students return to it throughout their career for reference and further development.

17 What makes From Zero to Sideman different from other music career programs?

02S focuses on how musicians are hired—not branding tricks or shortcuts. It teaches preparation as a professional skill.

18 How much time does this require, and can it fit into a busy schedule?

The material is self-paced and modular. Most students integrate it alongside existing commitments.

19 Is this actionable, or do I need to figure out how to apply it on my own?

Every concept is paired with examples of Mel Brown’s practical application. The goal is clarity, not abstraction. There’s also an option where you can ask Mel questions directly.

20What makes From Zero to Sideman different from other music career programs?

Instead of promising outcomes or emphasizing visibility, 02S teaches the professional standards employers rely on when making hiring decisions. The focus is on consistency, readiness, and communication—skills that support long-term careers, not just short-term opportunities.

Ready to stop guessing and start preparing?

Stop wondering what works. Start doing what does.
